“The laborer’s appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on.”

Proverbs 16:26
Why do people do what they do? What is their motivation? People do things for a host of reasons, and sometimes for many reasons at the same time! While it does not give us a complete theory of human motivation, Solomon here provides a key insight for us to consider. He claims that need is a basic motivation to a fruitful work life. A hungry appetite actually works for the worker. It does so by serving as a sort of boss, reminding the worker to keep pushing on in order to provide food to satisfy the empty stomach.

What is true with our physical life often is also true spiritually. Jesus says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6). Our spiritual need and the lack of righteousness we have on account of our sin ought to drive us to the only One who can satisfy that hunger: the Lord Himself.

But unlike our physical appetites, this is a righteousness for which we do not have to work. It has been earned for us entirely by Christ and given to us as a gift.
