“You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”

Micah 7:19
One style of fishing for Pacific tuna is called jig fishing. It involves using a heavy metal jig (a type of fishing lure) and dropping it to depths as far as several hundred feet in order to find fish. Sometimes when jig fishing in deep water, anglers will ask if they might hit the bottom. As most fishing happens in depths well beyond several hundred feet, it is impossible for the jig to reach the bottom. If it suddenly stops, it’s because it has been bit!

The prophet Micah declares that while the sinfulness of those that rebel against God is great, His desire to show mercy is even greater. His compassion has a depth that we cannot truly begin to comprehend, and He displays it to us when we turn to Him seeking forgiveness.

The judgment of God was carried out at the cross, where Jesus took it on our behalf. Because of this, we experience a depth of God’s compassion and mercy that truly has no bottom. Conceiving the oceans’ depths is hard for many of us; grasping the deep, deep love of Jesus is greater and more wondrous still.
