“So in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

Romans 12:5
During my senior year in high school track, I was a member of the 4x800m relay team. At one meet, someone took one of my favorite running shoes and never returned it. Fortunately, my teammate Phil wore the same size and had the same kind of shoes as the one that was taken. For the rest of the season, I would run the first leg wearing Phil’s shoe. As soon as I handed off the baton, I’d rush to the infield to take off the shoe and give it back to Phil so he could run the third leg. At one meet, a race official watching in amazement said, “I’ve heard of teamwork, but I’ve never seen anything like this!”

Sharing a shoe with Phil makes me think of Paul’s description of the body of Christ in Romans 12. Individually we are “members one of another,” sharing what is necessary to do God’s kingdom work.

Phil and I needed each other’s cooperation to complete the relay race, all of it instigated by Phil’s willing generosity. Similarly, as part of the body of Christ, we need each other’s cooperation to fulfill our purpose of bringing glory to God.
