“In that day you will say: ‘Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.’”

Isaiah 12:4
I was a college sophomore and was on campus the morning of 9/11. After my 8:00 class, I walked into the student union just as the television screen there was showing the first of the two WTC towers crumbling as if it were made of sand. I was stunned. We all were. And we had no way of comprehending what was going on. I began to panic for fear of war… I would surely be enlisted! Sorrow came over me for all the people whose lives were suddenly ended. What would all of this mean?

We never know when our days on earth will end. Thousands of people who began a normal workday that September morning were gone in an instant. Others for some reason were still alive, marveling at the delayed subway train, the changed flight, or the flat tire that rerouted them away from the disaster.

Twenty years later, I revisit often those thoughts of life’s brevity. Are you asking, Why am I here? What is it all about? Tragedies like 9/11 remind us all that if we live only for this world, we’ll miss what is most important: to make much of Christ.
