Though I first met Amos in an Iowa prison, he was originally from Liberia. Due to the civil war in Liberia, his family decided to immigrate to the United States. However, they first had to spend two years in a refugee camp in West Africa. At that temporary settlement, Amos was baptized as a boy.
Coming to America, Amos gradually wandered away from God and embraced a criminal lifestyle. When the law caught up with him, he was sent to prison. It was there that I spoke with him at our New Life Prison Community worship services, and he showed me his Liberian Bible.
Last year Amos decided to stand up in front of the prison congregation to profess his faith in Jesus Christ. Like the prodigal son of Luke 15, he had turned his back on the Father, but the Father was right there waiting to receive him when he returned. Witnessing Amos’ renewed faith was cause for celebration, not only for us but also for the angels in heaven. Our heavenly Father never gives up on His wandering children. And we shouldn’t either!
