“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

2 Corinthians 5:21
I know people who’ve always been germaphobic, having an extreme fear of germs and an obsession with cleanliness. It’s somewhat understandable since germs can lead to deadly illness. As I write this, the entire world is practicing social distancing due to the coronavirus. Now all of us are experiencing a phobia of germs to some degree.

But this, of course, does not unhinge the Lord. Jesus did more than take our sin “germs” away. God made His sinless Son to actually be sin for us, and in so doing, we get to be made perfectly clean, “the righteousness of God.” The pure and untainted One took our germs upon and into Himself. He was saturated with and infected by them for us. Amazing! The prophecy was fulfilled: “Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:12).

Praise God that rather than fearing sin and its toxic byproducts, we can focus on living like Jesus.
