“We were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—… by grace you have been saved.”

Ephesians 2:3-5
Like Nicodemus who was a high-ranking Pharisee, Paul also encountered Jesus. Before that he’d been full of murderous threats, pursuing those called Christians. Then one day he was confronted by the voice of Jesus, and he was forever changed. He spent the rest of his life spreading the good news of God’s kingdom.

Paul’s letters are encouraging to new believers and communicate directly to us today. He could speak firsthand of what it was to be dead in transgressions and sins, following the ways of this world. But he also testified of the newness of life living under the care of the Good Shepherd by the power of His Spirit.

The ways of this world can capture us. We get so caught up in our schedules and to-do lists that we forget who we are in Christ. We disregard our place in His kingdom. Even good works can cause us to lose sight of our gift of salvation.

I have a hand-crafted sign that says, “Today Is a Gift.” Each morning it reminds me to start the day in the delight of the newness of my life in Christ, a life He graciously, lovingly saved.
