“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Philippians 2:10-11
Included in Mark’s gospel account of Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, and trial are Jesus’ words in which He claims to be the promised Messiah and God Himself. While those witnessing against Him argued on, “the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, ‘Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?’ But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?’ ‘I am,’ said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven’” (Mark 14:60-62).

By combining Daniel’s prophecy (Daniel 7:13) and David’s proclamation (Psalm 110:1), Jesus showed Himself to be Messiah and God. There was no uncertainty on the part of the Council that Jesus was making these claims, for “the high priest tore his clothes [and said], ‘Why do we need any more witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?’ They all condemned him as worthy of death” (Mark 14:63-64).
