An infant’s mother is not only a caretaker and comforter; she is also the only source of food an infant knows. At the first pang of hunger, a baby will seek out his mother, crying and clamoring desperately for a feeding … the epitome of discontentment! Once weaned, that same hungry child will sit on his mother’s lap contentedly. He has gained understanding and trust. He knows that food will be provided and that he doesn’t have to cry to get it.


In the same way, the Christian believer has no reason for discontentment. All that our hearts long for find satisfaction in Christ. We have been forgiven and adopted into God’s family (Ephesians 1:5-7). Christ’s righteousness has been credited to our account (2 Corinthians 5:21). We have value beyond reckoning (Matthew 5:26). Our souls will never hunger or thirst again (John 4:14; John 6:35). All of this is ours in Christ because of what He accomplished on our behalf.


We find contentment when our souls can truly say, “It’s not about me; it’s all about Jesus.”
