“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe.”

Philippians 2:14-15
The Forgotten Five Hundred by Gregory Freeman (2008) chronicles the true story of the rescue of hundreds of Allied airmen who had parachuted from their planes into German-controlled Yugoslavia in World War II. These men were protected by Serbian villagers but needed to be evacuated to the safety of an Allied airbase. The airmen and villagers constructed with their own hands an airstrip on a plateau where a transport plane could land and take off with groups of airmen aboard.

In order for the transport plane to safely utilize the airstrip in the pitch-black night, flares made out of oil cans and hay bales donated by the villagers were improvised and placed at the edge of the runway. The lighted flares would point pilots to the airstrip.

Those airstrip flare lights remind me of how our actions serve as sparks in the darkness of our world. When those who observe our good deeds know that we are Christians, we point them to Jesus. Our humble efforts to follow Him can shine like stars in the universe, giving glory to our Father in heaven.
