“The Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead he must be kind to everyone …. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth.”

2 Timothy 2:24-25
Leaders have a particular role in God’s church when it comes to conflict. Conflict will happen at some point; it always does. A wise leader does not avoid the trouble, but rather engages in it without becoming quarrelsome, seeking peace to help God’s people navigate through it.

Notice what Paul says to look for in a leader. That person must patiently endure evil and correct opponents with gentleness. No leader does this perfectly, for we’re all sinners who lose our temper and respond harshly at times. But the godly leader is predominantly and increasingly marked by patience and gentleness. We dare not put someone who is impatient and harsh in a position of authority over us! Of course, this is not just for elders, deacons, or ministry leaders. We are all called to these traits of godliness because they are reflections of the heart and character of Jesus who was meek and gentle among us.

When we reflect the heart of Jesus in our conflicts, the hope is that those who are ensnared by Satan might come to their senses and escape his grasp.
