“I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.”

Jeremiah 17:10
The prophet Jeremiah speaks of how deeply set in their sinful ways God’s people were. It was as if evil was inscribed on their hearts and minds. They would be accountable for their wickedness.

Jeremiah knew he was also capable of such evil. Indeed, God knows you and me better than we know ourselves. “My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes” (Jeremiah 16:17). Thankfully, we have an answer for our sin problem. “But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me” (Psalm 109:21).

God has done just that. The Apostle Paul tells us, “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). We have a Father we can call out to as Jeremiah did, saying, “Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed” (17:14). We don’t deserve to stand before a perfect and holy God. But our Savior, Jesus, conquered death so that we could.
