“They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.”

2 Timothy 4:4-5
Paul describes with stunning clarity the days in which we live. We see that there have always been people who follow the pattern described in these verses, and there always has been the temptation to reject sound Scriptural truth.

We do not naturally want to hear that we are sinners, nor do we want to hear that we are unable to muster up the righteousness to save ourselves. We would prefer to bolster our self-confidence and hear that we are good, strong, and able to save ourselves. The way of faith is the way of humble submission to God’s truth. Still some will prefer to find teachers who will proclaim a basic message that suits their own desires.

Paul warns Timothy about this and commends to him a sober approach to ministry which will include suffering as well as the opportunity to preach the gospel and see people come to salvation. This is why we exist as a church—to help people turn from darkness to light. Let’s pray with all our hearts that we would remain faithful to God’s truth and lovingly share it with the lost around us.
