“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God.”

Luke 2:13
We don’t know a lot about the Lord’s messenger-servant beings, the angels. Depictions of them in art as chubby, winged babies do not seem to make sense. They clearly have abilities different than humans since we conceive of them traveling around the universe, from heaven to earth. And they keep their distance, very unlike angels such as Clarence, the angel in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life.

One thing is certain: they are obedient. When the Father brought the Son into this world, he uttered the command for all His angels to worship Him. And they did! All of them!

Casting our gaze on the angels outside of Bethlehem reminds us that it is Jesus who deserves all our worship, at Christmas time and beyond. We bow before Him, yet how quickly we shift our praise onto captivating holiday performances, gracious Christmas party hosts, or stunning gifts from thoughtful givers. Let’s pause to tell the Father and the Son how thankful we are for the gift of salvation. When we do so, we are joining in with the jubilant company of the Lord’s angels.
