“Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.”

Isaiah 51:11b
In The God Who Hung on the Cross (2008), you can read about Dick Woodward, a vibrant and devoted pastor of a growing church in Williamsburg, Virginia. He also was passionate about running, but over a ten-year period began to lose his physical abilities and eventually became completely paralyzed. It’s a powerful story about losing a life as it was known. Many of you reading this today also may find yourselves in an unexpected season of great loss.

Cling to your joy that’s rooted in Jesus even through “sorrow and sighing.” The aroma of Christ remains long after we’re gone.

Our joy in Jesus resounds with the truths of His amazing grace.

Although Pastor Dick’s life was dramatically changed, his ministry exploded. In fact, his mini Bible series continues to be heard around the world, even on solar-powered devices in remote places. He filled his days with study, teaching, mentoring, and encouraging… despite his paralysis. Before he passed away, I met with him and his wife. The beauty of Christ and the joy of the Lord filled the room.
