“How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’”

Matthew 22:43-44
Can you believe how patient Jesus is as He answers His critics and accusers? Today we get to see Him turn the tables on them. What single question will He ask them?

Jesus doesn’t place the focus on Himself, but on the Scriptures. Who is this Christ, this Messiah that the Scriptures point to? What was His lineage? These questions didn’t stump the Pharisees. Their quick reply, “the son of David,” could have been given by any school child. But Jesus’ follow-up question stumped them completely:

If David was the Messiah’s distant ancestor, how could David himself refer to Him as Lord?

Jesus had painted them into a corner. The Pharisees didn’t dare meddle with a Messianic prophecy. Nor could they explain it away.

Doesn’t it thrill you that Jesus once again had the last word? And as David’s son and Lord, He is the only one who can fulfill this exalted description. Yet He was willing to descend not just to Mary’s womb, but to the suffering and death that lay two days away.

Join me in amazement to see how low our Lord would stoop to save us.
