“Jesus … returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them, he was hungry.”

Luke 4:1-2
Adam could eat from every tree in the Garden of Eden but chose instead to sin against God. God’s wilderness people had manna from heaven but continually grumbled. Later, in the land flowing with milk and honey, they sinned their way into exile. The problem was never provision—it was rebellion. It is not God’s stinginess; it is our dissatisfaction in Him.

Enter Jesus, and the contrast couldn’t be more dramatic. He goes to the wilderness created by Adam’s sin and marked by the sin of every generation since. No fruit. No manna. No milk and honey. Full of the Spirit of God and the Word of God, Jesus combats Satan without any earthly provision. Jesus’ hunger was for that which truly satisfies. For “man shall not live by bread alone” (v. 4).

For the first time in human history, Satan is decisively defeated. Jesus came for those with appetites for sin. In His own deprivation, He didn’t disobey, grumble, or turn aside. He was made hungry like us so that we might truly be full. He wasn’t content to leave us in the wasteland. The host had arrived!
