“Though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.”

Colossians 2:5
My wife and I have enjoyed ministry opportunities through small groups. While I was in seminary, several couples met regularly at our apartment for Bible study. Then on Okinawa we hosted a weekly Bible study for servicemen/women there. In the churches I’ve pastored, we did the same. As a police chaplain, I’ve been privileged to have a group of officers who for many years have gathered to study Scripture and pray. We love welcoming them into our home and hearing their stories of faith.

Because of these experiences, I can relate to Paul’s heart for his friends in Colosse. Though he was never with them personally, he loved them. And he agonized for them, acutely aware of the stress of their anti-god culture and their risk of imprisonment for believing in Christ. Paul himself wrote to them while on house arrest, warning them of false teachers and reassuring them in their faith.

Find a way to be with others in worship and Bible study. You’ll be encouraged. Your faith in God will be anchored. Your love for others and for Christ will grow.
