“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:14
I loved the neighborhoods of my youth. I have wonderful memories from growing up with kind, caring neighbors who gave me a sense of security and peace.

Yet John introduces us to the greatest neighbor, one who dwells among us. In today’s key verse, “dwelling among us” is literally “tabernacled among us,” a reference to the Old Testament days when God’s glory was seen and His presence felt in the tabernacle. In Jesus, says John, God’s glory is seen and His presence is felt among us. I like this rendering of John 1:14: “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, generous inside and out, true from start to finish” (The Message).

In Jesus God has moved down into our neighborhood! And He’s lovingly generous. In fact, says John, “From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another” (v. 16, NLT). What security and peace! Even better news: He’s a permanent resident, in the neighborhood to stay.
