“Thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.”

Romans 6:17
At this point in our considerations of the book of 2 Timothy, let’s remind ourselves of the theme we are focusing on: guarding the good deposit.

Remember that it’s the truth of the gospel we are to guard, the good deposit made for us through Jesus. We want to safeguard it against those who blend in variations of the gospel, namely anything that tells us being saved comes by what we do rather than by what has already been done. In the world we live in, it’s tempting to believe that lie. Everything around us tells us what we give is what we get. In biblical Christianity, what Jesus gave is what we get!

So is our obedience unimportant then? Nothing could be further from the truth. Our obedience is indeed very important. When we put our faith in Jesus, we must abstain from evil and sin. Our efforts to obey are how we show our gratitude; it’s what we want to do when we’ve been saved. When we’re made right with God through faith alone in Christ alone, we want to live for Him. That good deposit He made in us brings back magnificent returns!
