“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17
Hopefully by now you’ve come to realize that the characters of Christmas all point to the central figure in this narrative: Jesus, whose birth, life, death, and resurrection change everything. We can imagine ourselves gathered around the manger, looking at the incarnation from their point of view.

We think of Mary who said yes to God’s plan for her, and we realize that our joyous response to His call on our lives is to say yes also. Joseph’s life from the moment he received the heavenly news prompts us to hold on loosely to our own lives and offer ourselves in service to our King. We are all, of course, either shepherds or wise men—shepherds who hear afresh the stunning good news and then go to share it with others; or outsiders from afar traveling life’s road in search of the once and forever King at whose feet we’ll find our worship entirely reordered.

The angels were there every step of the way, from the dawn of creation to Jesus’ triumph over His enemies. We are not angels, but we can declare with them, Glory to God in the highest!
