“When Jesus saw his mother there… he said to his mother, ‘Dear woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.”

John 19:26-27
You may think of yourself as anything but a caregiver, identifying instead with your paid employment as a teacher or plumber or doctor. Perhaps you view yourself as “just a mom” or “just a friend.” In any of these areas of work and life, many of us also are called to the truly daunting task of being caregivers. We begin to realize how important we are in another’s life.

The Family Caregiver Alliance defines an informal caregiver as “an unpaid individual involved in assisting others with… daily living and/or medical tasks.” Defined this way, many of us are caregivers now or will be in the future.

Besides shepherding the disciples and feeding the crowds, Jesus also cared for His own mother. As He hung on the cross, Jesus placed His mother in the care of John, His friend. We think of John the disciple or apostle, but he also was John the caregiver.

If you’re helping anyone—child or adult—with daily life activities, you’re also a caregiver. Be moved to do so out of profound gratitude that Jesus Christ has cared for you.
