“The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? The LORD is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies.”

Psalm 118:6-7
As a police chaplain I have at times walked into volatile situations to help mediate extreme anger between people. Some of these settings have been dangerous. Officers have even given their lives as warring parties turned their anger on the authority that had come to offer help and peace.

Over the years, it was not unusual for a chaplain call to come when I was worn out, tired, and burdened. On my way to the scene, my prayer was “Lord, I know You are with me. Make me an instrument of Your peace.” Instinctively, a Bible verse or two would come to mind, and God’s Spirit would move me to share those verses at the right moment to those entangled in the difficulty.

God’s Divine Presence is available in our most unstable and fiery encounters. Verse five of Psalm 118 speaks of “anguish,” that very real and distressful feeling you may have known at times. We all need courage to deal with hard and dangerous situations. The psalmist knows in such times that God is his helper. He is your helper today as well, and His love endures forever.
