“‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ.’”

Mark 8:29
Weekly I have the privilege of studying God’s Word with a group of young men with intellectual disabilities. I love the simplicity, transparency, and sincerity of their faith. I asked a few of them to tell me why they love Jesus; their answers are exquisite.

One of the guys is my friend Kevin, 23. He has a genetic anomaly known as Cri du chat syndrome. Kevin told me, “I love Jesus because Jesus loves me. And because He is God. Jesus and God like us to sing songs about them. Jesus saves our lives and takes us to heaven when we die.” If you spent a little time with Kevin, you’d see how he loves to sing praise songs. His joy is contagious; you can’t help but smile and want to join in!

Kevin’s expression of faith communicates a lot. He knows Jesus loves him. He understands (perhaps more than many!) the mystery of the Trinity. He understands that, as the catechism tells us, the chief end of man is to glorify God. And he knows without a doubt that he’ll be with the Lord forever in heaven. Are you embracing these solid, simple truths?
