“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua 1:5
Joshua heard Moses give God’s words of assurance to him, but he needed to hear it again. And this time, it came directly from the voice of God into Joshua’s ear. “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Think of how powerful those words are coming from a parent to a child, from a husband to a wife, or from one friend to another. To hear them from the God of all Creation must have been astounding. God was truly nearby.

Joshua knew that getting the people across the Jordan River and dealing with the enemies in the land could only be done by the hand of God. From the first chapter on in the book of Joshua, God’s presence was known to His servant. His promises were reiterated and always proved true.

Years ago I was called on as a police chaplain to rally other state patrol chaplains after terrorists attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. We opened our church and posted a sign: “Open for Prayer 24/7, Come!” We directed our prayers to God because we knew that He is with us, 24/7. Evil draws near in times like that. But God is nearer still!
