“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

Matthew 10:39
Much of Northern Africa today—even its vast desert lands—is Muslim. However, by the time Clement and Origen were teaching in Alexandria, Christianity had spread from Egypt to Morocco.

One of the great cities was Carthage in the north of modern day Tunisia. In the 2nd century, it was home to Christian thinker Tertullian. Some 300 years later the famous Augustine was schooled there. Also, we must not forget about Perpetua, a young Christian woman who was martyred there.

Perpetua was a new mother and new convert to Christianity when, around AD 203, the Roman emperor called for the persecution of Christians. Perpetua and her friends were arrested for their faith. Unable to stand the thought of losing his daughter, her father begged her to recant. She asked him if a vase could be called anything else but a vase. He replied, “No.” Then she responded, “Well, neither can I be called anything other than what I am—a Christian.”

Perpetua refused to worship the emperor. She and her friends were taken to the arena to die that day.
