“It is better to heed a wise man’s rebuke than to listen to the song of fools.” Ecclesiastes 7:5

Ecclesiastes 7:5
I think we all know popular songs that are very original. Though not God-glorifying, the music and mirth of those songs is enticing. By the same token, some Christian music can be very unoriginal, especially when it attempts to mimic “the song of fools.”

Wisdom is better, is it not? C.S. Lewis said, “Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth… you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it” (1952).

Wisdom makes the proud humble, makes worship genuine, and makes music original. Wouldn’t the song born out of wisdom be more profound than the song of one who has found life only in vanity? As the Ecclesiastes author notes, one who is aware of his finite nature is more worthy of our time. Our infinite God took on a finite nature to offer His life that we might be saved from death and live. In humility this day, confess your sin to the Lord, recognize your deep need for Him, and be refreshed by His never-ending grace.
