“‘Do not come any closer,’ God said. ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.’”

Exodus 3:5
Moses didn’t have a great record on his journey to leadership. When he decided to stand up for his people, he wasn’t well-received since he’d been seen earlier killing an Egyptian taskmaster. To avoid Pharaoh’s punishment for the deed, he ran for his life.

There he was, now a lowly shepherd on the far side of a desert, when one day he saw a bush fully on fire yet not being consumed. He drew close for a better look. The voice of God called out to him from the bush, and in fear he hid his face. The Lord told him that He’d heard the cry of His oppressed people and was enlisting Moses to be their deliverer.

We know from Moses’ response (v. 11) that he didn’t feel qualified. He was aware of his weakness. There was dirt from his past that could be dug up. He knew how powerful and stubborn Pharaoh was. There were better men for the job.

If you’ve ever found yourself avoiding a task the Lord has called you to, you might relate to Moses. Remember that you stand on holy ground, ground that is holy because He’s right there with you.
