“And we know in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28
Every fisherman knows you cannot land a strong fish without a proper rod and reel, no matter how hard you fight to do so. A proper fishing reel operates by using a drag system, a mechanism for applying pressure on the line, wearing down the fish as it attempts to swim away. As it tires, the rod and reel will be able to control the fish and gradually bring it up to the boat.

I have thought about how in my relationship with the Lord I am sometimes a lot like that fish, fighting and pulling and not wanting to be brought in. There are times when the Lord uses our own mistakes, born out of our old nature, as a part of His plan to help us grow in repentance, confession, and humility. He lovingly applies just the right amount of pressure to help us grow weary of our sin, bringing us into a deeper dependence upon Himself.

When we think of God intending events and experiences for our good, we can unconsciously assume that those good things won’t be difficult. Remember: He uses all things for His glory and for our ultimate our good.
