“We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God’s fellow worker in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.”

1 Thessalonians 3:2-3a
In order to strengthen the Thessalonians and prevent their afflictions from overwhelming them, Timothy was sent to help. He came to encourage them in their faith and help establish them. Think of “establish” as what you do when you cement a brick into a wall. You secure it so it won’t come loose. Wouldn’t it be great to be on the receiving end of help from someone like Timothy?

We need people in our lives, especially when we’re feeling weak. Before God made a helper fit for Adam, God declared, “It is not good for man to be alone.” Human beings need each other; they do best when they are with other human beings. We can do more together, we can stand stronger when we are together. As Ecclesiastes says, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (4:12).

God used Timothy as His coworker to help the church remain steadfast under persecution. God has sent a Helper to us too—the Holy Spirit—to remind us that as we suffer for the name of Christ, it is not in vain.
