“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Matthew 6:20
Heaven … that celestial city in the sky. Artists draw its inhabitants holding harps, hymn books, and palm branches. It’s depicted by cartoonists as a land of clouds: cloud chairs, cloud beds, cloud foundations of buildings. This may sound enticing for some, but it’s far from the truth—and magnificence—of what heaven is.

The concept of heavenly clouds came from the sky being called the heavens in Scripture (as with some translations for the creation account in Genesis 1:8: “God called the expanse heaven.”). But the point is that the visible world around us is not all there is. Jesus promised to prepare a place for us in His Father’s house, a house with many rooms. And surely we can know that the God who created such beauty on earth will make heaven far greater than anything this world has to offer.

Take the gospel news seriously in this life. When you die and stand before God, there will only be two possible destinations: heaven or hell. Your eternal home is determined by your relationship with Jesus Christ here and now.
