“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”

Romans 12:1
In our years of church planting ministry, my husband and I so appreciated people who had a heart to serve. That servant’s heart was essential for church growth. Perhaps someone comes to mind for you like our friends Beverly and Elmer.

They married later in life, after each losing a spouse to death. They were always available. During the construction of the church building, they were the first to come and the last to leave. They visited the sick and lonely, and they gladly shared their resources. After Beverly was widowed a second time, she continued her life of service. When asked how she was spending her days in a memory care facility, she said she was caring for others. Though she declined mentally, she visited the residents and brought hope and cheer daily as a reminder of God’s love.

There are practical ways we can offer ourselves to God as a “fragrant offering” (Ephesians 5:2). The reason a servant’s heart is so precious to us is because it echoes back to our Savior, the One who gave His whole life to rescue us and bring us Home.
