“Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

James 4:8
Our grandson moved with his wife and young children from their small community in Kansas to Thailand to do mission work there. After several months, the three-year-old said to her dad, “I miss those people back home.” He suggested they FaceTime their friends. “No, Dad,” she replied. “I need them to touch me.” Sometimes we need that human touch—the feel of a handshake or an arm around the shoulder or a good, long hug.

God knew that we would need His Son to touch us, so He sent Him in the flesh, right into our world. Jesus drew near. Multiple times in the gospel books we read that Jesus touched people. He entered into the lives of the poor and the wealthy, the sick and the healthy, the unknown and the well-known. He enters into our lives, too, drawing near to us in a variety of ways.

The Lord created us to be in community and to be nurtured by each other even through human touch. Like my little great-granddaughter who needed to be near the people she knew, we need to be near our Savior. He has given us His Holy Spirit to do just that.
