“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”

Ecclesiastes 3:11
Throughout the four gospels the subject of eternal life is addressed repeatedly. John 3:16 is probably the most well-known reference. Even in the world of sports, it is not unusual to see a placard held up with “John 3:16” written on it to gain the attention of the fans. Why is the subject of eternity one that keeps popping up in our world? It’s because deep within the human heart there is a cry for knowing what is beyond this life.

It may be that our understanding of eternal life is too narrow. In John 4 when Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman, He didn’t say that if she believed in Him, she would go to heaven after death. Instead, He offered her living water in the present, water that would spring up to eternal life. We don’t have to wait for the end of our days. Our eternal life begins with believing in Jesus and receiving Him into the very center of our being.

The desire to live is strong in most people; death stirs up fear. But Jesus overcame death. He promises us peace in this life and a home with Him in eternity when we believe.
