“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Isaiah 53:5
Many of my imprisoned brothers in Christ are paying a heavy price for their sins. They feel the weight of it daily. But because Jesus loves them, He volunteered to pay an even greater price in their place. He gave Himself to be crushed for their sins, and for your sins, and for my sins.

Pointing ahead to the Savior, Isaiah said the One who saves us would take up our pain and suffering. He’d bear the punishment for our transgressions and iniquities, every one of them.

“Our sins are a heavy load; but they are laid on Christ, by whom we are freed from the load. Thus, when we were ruined, and, estranged from God, and hastening to hell, Christ took upon himself the filthiness of our iniquities, to rescue us from everlasting destruction” (John Calvin, 1550).

On the cross Jesus shielded us from God’s wrath. By His wounds we are healed. Whether we’re literally locked up behind bars or figuratively held captive by our sin, Jesus’ punishment brought us peace. He was stricken, afflicted, pierced, and crushed so that we might be declared free!
