“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness.”

Colossians 1:13
Is Jesus just another man? No! He rescued you from darkness, sin, and death.

Rescue involves someone risking themself to save another. Through the cross, Jesus gave His life to rescue us from the “dominion of darkness,” the jurisdiction ruled by the power and tyranny of Satan. It’s the domain Jesus referred to during His arrest, and the same dark powers Paul identified as active in our world.

The darkness is a horrible, destructive place. As a police chaplain, I was called years ago to a triple homicide. A teenager had killed his mother and two sisters. I saw the young man ushered into the squad car. Even from a distance, I could sense the “kingdom of darkness” at work there.

The good news is that anyone can be rescued from that kingdom. Just as God, through Moses, barged into Egypt and rescued the Israelites, so on the cross Jesus barged into the kingdom of darkness and rescued us. Jesus is an extraordinary Man! “In him was life … the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5).
