“Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters.”

Psalm 144:7
Because I live near Lake Michigan, I often hear about emergency rescues there. High winds and crashing waves can rise up quickly, causing danger before people realize it. While walking on the pier, persons have been swept off by unexpected waves. While out for a swim, they can be suddenly overpowered by unforeseen waves. Then someone else must reach down and attempt to rescue them.

These accounts always remind me of our God who has been reaching down and rescuing us since time began. He, of course, is always successful. Threatened not by the forces of nature but by the strong forces of the enemy, David prayed, “Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down; touch the mountains…. Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me” (v. 5, 7).

God is a rescuing God. He reached down often to save David. He reached into a lion’s den for Daniel, into a fiery furnace for three friends, into prison cells for the apostles. And through Jesus, He reached down to earth to rescue us in the midst of our sin.
