“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

Psalm 23:5
Many of us are familiar with Psalm 23, in part because it is often recited at funerals we’ve attended. This psalm reminds us that our Good Shepherd loves us and keeps us—in this life, through death, and unto glory. Jesus declares Himself to be this shepherd, and He proved it by laying down His life for the sheep (see John 10).

Part of the comfort of Psalm 23 is found in the two sides of the imagery. Yes, we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, but we need not fear evil. Why? Because He is with us—His rod and staff comfort us. We’re given another startling set of images: a table prepared and the presence of enemies. In other words, even as enemies gather, David and all God’s people can enjoy rich table fellowship with the Lord.

The same is true for you today if you know Jesus as your Savior. Sure, enemies gather. Yes, you are confronted daily with the brokenness of this world, the temptations and accusations of Satan, and your own struggle with sin. But even now, you can enjoy fellowship with your God in the presence of your enemies.
