“I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. … Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.”

John 6:47-48; 56
During a difficult season in life, I had planned to spend several days fishing offshore. I’d hoped for a relaxing, enjoyable time, but what I got was a trip to remember for all the wrong reasons. The captain and crew were completely disagreeable. The weather unexpectedly turned rough. The fishing was bad. The attitudes of many on board were terrible. Rather than finding renewal and peace, I felt like more difficulties had followed me onto the water, and I couldn’t help but wonder if God was intentionally working against me.

Have you ever felt like God was working against you? Certainly, His sovereignty over every part of your life cannot be disputed. But He also, lovingly, is always for us instead of against us. Even in trouble or difficulty, He is for us.

Jesus described Himself as our bread of life, promising that anyone who was unified with Him by faith would have eternal life. When we participate in the Lord’s Supper, we are reminded that Jesus has not abandoned us. He is for us to the point that He gave His perfect life for ours.
