“Then the angel showed me … on each side of the river, the tree of life, bearing its twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.”
Revelation 22:1-2
Here we find ourselves at the end of all things, and also at the beginning. Our first parents walked in the cool of the day with our God, enjoying His bounteous garden filled with flowing streams and delectable fruit. Due to their sin, the way to that garden was barred to them and to us … apart from Jesus, that is.
When Jesus came and declared Himself to be the Water and the Bread of Life, He fulfilled every promise in Scripture and beckoned us forward toward a new feast. We come to a new garden, one flowing with water from the throne of God and of the Lamb. Could the woman at the well even imagine this? And the trees—oh, the beautiful trees! The tree of life swallows up the whole scene, with fruit that no longer simply nourishes, but offers healing.
This garden is not meant to be a “once upon a time” garden, but a “happily ever after” garden. There is no tree with accursed fruit, no accuser, no sin, no death. The very image of our eternal reunion with God is that of a feast—where there’ll be no more hunger, no more thirst, no more tears.
