“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

Proverbs 4:23
This verse should stand out to us like a neon sign. In Proverbs the heart refers to the center of one’s inner life and orientation to God. With the ever-present pull on our hearts from social media, television, and Hollywood, it’s easy for Satan to rob us of God’s joy. What we take into our hearts and minds influences the development of our attitudes and emotions. No wonder Solomon tells us to guard our hearts above all else. God alone can filter out, delete, and draw us away from the evil.

In high school, three of us met with a Navigators ministry guy named Johnnie. He challenged us to memorize Scripture that would protect our hearts and minds. Even today I carry on a ring small cards with Bible verses printed on them to keep God’s Word forefront in my mind.

If I feel crushed by worry, I call to mind Psalm 94:19: “When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul” (New American Standard Bible). Let your heart be guarded in all situations by the firm, lasting, comforting Word of God.
