“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18
My heart went out to the man being interviewed on the news who had just lost his home to wild fires. His wife stood beside him as he offered expressions of gratitude. He said that though their home and possessions were lost, their lives were spared, and he was grateful. How does a person stay thankful in times of such devastation?

A good deal of it is in keeping perspective. Losing perspective—whether in marriage, in relationships, in work settings, etc.—brings unwanted and unhealthy results. Keeping the bigger picture in mind is sure to help.

But just setting our minds to having a good perspective may not always work. The foundation of gratitude that remains solid even in the worst of times comes from the Lord. It’s in knowing it is His will for us that we give thanks in all situations. It’s in realizing we can be nothing other than thankful for what He has done to save us and redeem us from our sins.

There is power in a grateful heart. But there is even more power in the God who works all things together for our good.
