“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

1 Peter 5:10
By its very nature, suffering is unappealing. That is certainly an understatement! No one wants to suffer. But in this world where sin and its effects abound, you can’t avoid it completely. Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). While this reality can be discouraging, take heart. There’s more to the story.

When Jesus said we will have trouble, He also said in the same verse, “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” And in 1 Peter 5:10, Peter reminds us that despite our suffering, “the God of all grace” is still at work in our lives.

I watched as this message of God’s grace in suffering upheld Russ in the final months of his life. He was so focused on this truth that many days he was the one comforting me as we talked about the promise of heaven awaiting him. These aren’t merely words. God’s sustaining grace poured into us because of Jesus Christ. Let it strengthen you in your suffering, reminding you that you are not alone. He may not remove the misery, but He will always bring you through it.
