“God will bring to judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time for every deed.”

Ecclesiastes 3:17
Someone I know recently went through a lengthy, brutal trial. The evidence seemed clear. In the process there was delay after delay. Finally, the verdict was read and justice was rendered. To say it was a disappointment would be a huge understatement. The teacher in Ecclesiastes is pointing out that life is filled with moments like this—grand disappointments, harsh letdowns, real or perceived injustices.

We all want justice to be fair and to be timely. We ache deeply for the right thing to happen and for it to happen immediately. But often the wickedness of this world seems to win out. The Ecclesiastes writer even states that fact twice in a row in verse 16.

But there is hope! God will address the wrongs of this world and of this life. He will judge the righteous and the wicked. God knows the right moment and means to take care of it. After all, isn’t that precisely what He did in coming to us as a man, dying on the cross at Calvary, and taking on the death sentence we all deserved? One day He will come again and set all things right.
