“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial because, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

James 1:12
When my life went sideways, I had to face that fact that I had come to view blessings as a basic right, not as a gift of God. As a believer, I felt entitled. Blessings to me had become the business of Christianity: my soul for God’s obedient and prompt delivery of good things.

But if the blessings I receive are a requirement as opposed to a gift, then I have entered into a transaction. If I have entered into a transaction which focuses on the exchange of goods for some nice prayers and faithful church attendance, then the entire crux of Christianity is about me.

This, of course, is not Christianity! The whole point of our lives here on earth is to glorify God and to be made more and more like Christ. This usually means that we lay down what we want in order to pick up our cross (Matthew 16:24). However, we can trust that in following God, He will provide us with everything we need.

The smallest details of our lives have been known and ordered by God since Adam drew his first breath. Every good thing that we receive is from Him.
