“Cornelius, a centurion … and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.”

Acts 10:1-2
Through Cornelius, God was developing His church, and the gospel was going out to the world. Cornelius was a respected, tough-minded military man and a seeker of God. Connecting with Peter, a common fisherman and disciple of Jesus, was one of the most important things he did. In fact, Cornelius was so overwhelmed by it that he fell at Peter’s feet. But Peter told him to get up, for he refused to be worshiped. Peter explained to him plainly that everyone—whether Jew or Gentile—who believes in Jesus Christ receives forgiveness of sins through His name (see v. 43).

I was serving as chaplain for a law enforcement agency when the Chief let me know one day, “I’m clearing my schedule for 30 minutes each Thursday morning to meet with you and ask for your prayer and spiritual guidance.” So the arrangements were made. We would share God’s truth, and it rubbed off on other officers in headquarters. Often an officer would stop me and say, “Chaplain, do you have a moment?”

We must be at the ready, prepared always to give an answer for the hope that we have.
