“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.”

Psalm 145:13
When I was selling drugs on the street, I was not only trying to build my own name, but also was attempting to build my own personal little kingdom. I wanted to be the sovereign ruler of everything in my domain. I thought controlling a city block “owned” by someone else would make me feel great. But those people didn’t love me or care about me. And I was only furthering a system that was injecting death into my community. Somehow I thought I’d be a grand ruler of a kingdom whose domain turned out to be only in my head.

Sound familiar? Maybe you’ve been there, too, in one way or another. You don’t have to be a drug dealer to have these kinds of ridiculous aspirations. All human beings, in their sin, want to rule their own little kingdoms. But in order to do that, they must first dethrone the true King, God Himself.

So, when God saves a people for Himself, He trains them to care about His kingdom. He holds them by the hand as they let their kingdoms crumble into dust. Thankfully, He remains faithful and loving to us.
