“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, …[it] will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’”

John 4:13-14
There are two wells associated with the patriarch Jacob in Scripture. The first, near Haran, is unkempt yet functional. Here, God led Jacob to find a wife and begin the family that would become Israel (Genesis 29). This well stands as a testament to God’s faithfulness, even when Jacob was a visitor in a foreign land.

The second, in Sychar, is where Jesus met the Samaritan woman (John 4:7-9) and offered her “living water” (John 4:10), which would satisfy her spiritual thirst eternally. The well’s water, drawn from a depth of nearly 40 meters, is cool and refreshing, and many travelers consider drawing and drinking from it to be a highlight when touring Israel.

These wells symbolize God’s provision for both physical and spiritual needs. Just as Jacob encountered God’s faithfulness in Haran, and just as the Samaritan woman received salvation in Sychar, so also we are invited to come to God and drink deeply of His grace in Christ. In seasons of wandering or thirst, trust in the God of Jacob, who offers the living water of eternal life.
