“When you were dead in your sins, … God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, … nailing it to the cross.”

Colossians 2:13-14
Here’s what God in Christ has done for us: In His amazing mercy, He resolved our sin issue once for all, erasing the record of our sins completely as if they never existed. No trace remains. Charges against us were nailed to the cross.

The chorus of this worship song summarizes it: “This, the power of the cross:/ Son of God, slain for us./ What a love! What a cost!/ We stand forgiven at the cross” (Keith Getty and Stuart Townend, 2005).

I was on a flight from Guam to Saipan when the Air Micronesia pilot announced, “We are now flying over the deepest part of the ocean known to man, the Mariana Trench.” I grabbed my Bible and opened to Micah 7:19 which says, “You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.” The Mariana Trench is almost seven miles deep. If the tallest mountain on earth, Mt. Everest, were dumped into the trench, there would still be a mile of ocean covering it. Imagine our “mountain” of sin being dumped like that, never to be recovered.
