“The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert .... The angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, ‘What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid.’”

Genesis 16:7, 21:17
God sees everything. He sees us throughout every minute of every day. If we did not know what a loving, patient God He is, this would be terrifying news to us!

God saw Hagar in her time of desperation. As an Egyptian slave in Abraham’s household, she may have known something of Abraham’s God. Whether she believed in God or not, He saw her and even spoke to her directly when she fled from her mistress, Sarah. He told her to go back and submit to Sarah (Genesis 16:9), and she obeyed. Later, when she was banished, God saw her and spoke kindly to her in the desert, promising her a son and many descendants.

From Hagar’s story, we know that God sees us, hears our cries of desperation, and speaks comfort to us through His written Word. In some of my most hopeless times, He brings to mind Bible verses I have memorized. Sometimes I ask Him to speak up and help me hear Him. His “voice” is unmistakable because His thoughts are not my thoughts (Isaiah 55:8). But I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that He sees me and cares for me.
